NY Businessmen Affected By Junta Seizures

The Hellenic American (Sep/Oct 1967)

New York, NY,-  Six owners of 24-hour diners in the New York metropolitan area have complained of properties they had purchased in rural Greece, seized by the Greek junta government of Col. George Papadopoulos.  The restaurant owners had been informed by InAmerica, a Massachusetts firm that represented the real estate agent in Athens, that the Greek government had seized the properties, declaring that the purchases were void.   Apparently, a new law was enacted, limiting the right to purchase land in rural areas of Greece to Greek citizens.

In spite of the fact that dual citizenship is permitted for naturalized American citizens originally from Greece, the action was reportedly taken because of a rule requiring the Greeks with American citizenship to have personally traveled to Greece for the closing of the transaction.

The American affiliate has indicated attempts being made to request a reversal of the rule, but they were not optimistic in light of the fact that the dictatorship has no appetite for following traditional real estate laws that existed prior to the April 21, 1967.
